For the 2021 skate season, board member Peggy Seto started up a junior and senior high school girls skate group at the Genesis Centre. Peggy is a teacher at the Nelson Mandela high school and felt that girls from under-represented communities in the NE, would benefit from skateboarding.
The club runs after school on Fridays, and we hope to be able to run throughout most of the summer too.
The group is free to join. You will need to fill out a waiver. You also need to wear a helmet if you’re under 18. We have a couple of extra skateboards to loan out during the sessions, so you can try before you buy.
If you’d like to eventually get your own skateboard, we will help you with choosing and buying a suitable one. We recommend purchasing one from a skate shop like Shredz, instead of from a department store or toy store.
Dan McGarvey from CBC Calgary also did a piece on this unique skate group.

If you live in the NE Communities, are 13 to 20 years old, and want to give skateboarding a try, get in touch via email and we will let you know when the next session is.
